Bookstores are getting intensely competitive, and as the war for having a greater share in the market heats up, the discount has emerged as a major weapon.
A segment of the market relies heavily on discounts to protect and increase its market share by attracting more readers. The discount bookstores can be broadly divided into two categories– the first category includes those stores which offer discounts once or twice a year on some special occasion, and the second category includes those stores which offer discounts all year.
The book stores offering discounts all year are often run by the publishers. As they are directly selling the books without a middleman, they can offer them at a much lower price. In other words, the profit margin of the retailer would be passed on to the customers in the form of a discount.
Many of the top publishers have started running online discount stores. This has helped them increase their volume of sales, thus putting them in a position to offer even higher discounts.
However, there are certain bookstores that are not run by publishers, but they continue to offer discounts all year. Many of them are able to offer discounts, because they sell used books. These books are offered at half of the original price of the book. The discounts can even go to 80% in certain cases. Many of these stores operate only online. Due to low overhead costs, they continue to offer good discount rates.
Most of the bookstores offer discounts once or twice during the year, when they clear their old stocks and replenish them with new books. They sell the old books at nominal prices by offering heavy discounts. This process is also known as a clearance sale. Most seasoned readers wait for such clearance sales to make bulk purchases.
